History Of Mt, Calvary

HISTORY of Mount Calvary

The late Rev. Thomas Robertson established the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church on October 15, 1945 less than a mile down the River Road from it's present location. Some of its first Deacons were Brothers, Alphonse Charles, George Ward, Joe Brooks. Elliot Variste, Ed Nash, Sonny Cojoe, and Essex Jackson.

Rev Robertson pastored this church from beginning until God called him home in 1967. In 1966, Rev. Haskell Williams became Assistant Pastor and in 1967, after Rev. Robertson's death, Rev Williams was elected and installed as Pastor of Mount Calvary Baptist Church.

Under the leadership of Rev. Williams, Mt Calvary experienced tremendous growth; old debts from the initial move were paid off, thanks to the financial efforts of Deacon Herbert Stemly and other dedicated members, Mt Calvary later bought more adjacent property in back and along one side of the church. The church was totally renovated, more pews were bought, new carpet was installed, new bathrooms, a pastor study and a kitchen was added, walls and ceilings were changed, a new organ was purchased and a much needed Baptismal Pool was installed.

On August 10, 1995, Rev. Williams’s death sent shock waves through the church, the community and many hearts near and far.

One year after Rev. Williams’s death, Mt Calvary once again had to elect a new pastor. The search was wide and extensive, but lo and

behold, there was a Ram in the Bush, one of our own homegrown known as Freddie Howard. Pastor Howard was sent by God and was installed as pastor of Mount Calvary Baptist Church on May 12, 1996.

Pastor Howard bought new vision, new energy and most of all new leadership. Mount Calvary has acquired a 15 passenger van, new organ and upgraded our sound system. Over 3800 sq. ft. of additional space to house a new kitchen, library, dining area and rest rooms are now a reality. On June 1, 2003 Pastor Howard preached our Dedicatory Message in our Multi-Purpose Building, which we are now using as our place of worship until we build our new Sanctuary. On May 31, 2007, Mt. Calvary purchased Four Acres of Land for our new Sanctuary.

On December 29, 2010 Mt. Calvary paid the loan in full on the building we are now using for our place of worship.

Mt. Calvary has a membership that continues to grow. It has Baptized and Christened many. Numerous couples have been married and many souls have been funeralized.

I would ask that all of you join us as we strive to become the Church that Christ is coming back for. Ephesians 5:26-27 says that he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, that he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such things; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

May God continue to shower his blessings down on Mt. Calvary Baptist Church and all churches that are open in His Name
